Technicians sorting items in a severely cluttered room
Hoarding Cleanup

Hoarding cleanup, at a pace the household can handle.

Severe clutter is rarely about the clutter. We have done this often enough to know that how the work is done matters as much as whether it gets done.

Hoarding cleanups go badly when they are treated as a skip-and-shovel job. Possessions get thrown out that mattered. The person living there feels ambushed. Six months later the house looks the same. We go slower at the start, keep the resident or the family involved in what stays and what goes, and sort as we work.

Underneath the clutter there is often a real biohazard. Rodent and insect droppings, spoiled food, animal waste, mold, and in some cases human waste where plumbing has failed or become unreachable. We are equipped for all of it, so you deal with one crew instead of three.

We are frequently called by adult children managing a parent’s home, by social workers and elder-services coordinators, by landlords facing a code enforcement deadline, and by estate executors who have opened a door and not known where to start. Any of those is a normal call for us.

What the job includes

  • Sorting as we go

We work room by room and category by category, at whatever pace the household sets.

  • Valuables recovery

Cash, documents, jewelry, photographs and paperwork surface constantly in these homes. We look for them and hand them over.

  • Removal and haul-away

Everything designated for removal is bagged, carried out and disposed of, with recyclables and donations separated where possible.

  • Biohazard remediation

Animal and human waste, spoiled food, pest contamination and mold are remediated and the surfaces disinfected.

  • Deep clean and deodorizing

Once the volume is gone, the property is cleaned properly and treated for embedded odor.

When to call us

  • Rooms or exits are blocked, or there is only a narrow path through the property.
  • There is animal waste, spoiled food, pest activity or a persistent odor.
  • A landlord, insurer, code enforcement officer or family court has set a deadline.
  • You are clearing a parent’s or relative’s home and the volume is beyond what family can do.
  • A property needs to be listed, let or handed back and cannot be shown in its current state.

FAQ

Common questions

Will you throw away my things?
Not without you. Nothing marked as keep goes anywhere, and if something looks like it might matter to you we will ask. Documents, cash, photographs and jewelry get set aside as we find them.
Can this be done in stages?
Yes, and often it should be. Some households do far better with several shorter days than one overwhelming one. We will build the schedule around what the person living there can cope with.
Does the resident have to be there?
No, but it usually helps if they want to be. We can also work entirely with a family member, executor or case worker as the point of contact.
Is this covered by insurance?
Sometimes — particularly where there is water damage, pest infestation or a biohazard component. We will document the job in a way that gives a claim the best chance, and tell you if we do not think there is one.
Will anyone know?
Our vehicles are unmarked and our crews do not discuss jobs at the property. We stage removal to draw as little attention as the site allows.
